FHCA Nurse Leadership Conference

According to the Florida Department of Health, fall related injuries are the leading cause of emergency room visits per year in the state. Statistics are in for just the state of Florida. In 2008 alone, the reported number of falls in each age group is dramatically more than any other related injury. This information can be found on the Department of Health website for Florida.

Here are the numbers for falls that resulted in an emergency department visit: for ages 65 – 74 (31,268 falls), 75 – 84 (41,924 falls), 85+ (34,682 falls).

The next closest reported injury is Moving Traffic -any occupant in the car. Here are these numbers: for ages 65 – 74 (5,834 injuries), 75 – 84 (3,367 injuries), 85+ (949 injuries).

So by these numbers you are at least10 times more likely to fall down and go to the emergency room than being injured in a car accident!
