FHCA Nurse Leadership Conference

What is a Newton of Force?

National Falls Prevention Awareness Day

The Senate recently passed a bill declaring September 22, 2013 National Falls Prevention Day.  They want to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults.

Falls are becoming so common that one out of every three adults over the age of 65 will fall each year. “Fall prevention programs are a solid investment that save people’s lives…” said Kohl, Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.

Statistics are in for just the state of Florida. In 2008 alone, the reported number of falls in each age group is dramatically more than any other related injury. This information can be found on the Department of Health website for Florida.

Here are the numbers for falls that resulted in an emergency department visit: for ages 65 – 74 (31,268 falls), 75 – 84 (41,924 falls), 85+ (34,682 falls).

The next closest reported injury is Moving Traffic -any occupant in the car. Here are these numbers: for ages 65 – 74 (5,834 injuries), 75 – 84 (3,367 injuries), 85+ (949 injuries).

So by these numbers you are at least10 times more likely to fall down and go to the emergency room than being injured in a car accident!
